Core Principals of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

We believe every person deserves the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their diagnosis, disability, age, or support needs.  This page explains the core principals behind positive behaviour support.

What is Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based approach that aims to improve an individual’s quality of life by understanding the underlying causes of challenging behaviours.

It focuses on proactive strategies, teaching new skills, and modifying environments rather than simply reacting to behaviours.

Core Principals of Positive Behaviour Support

Person-Centred — Focuses on the individual’s unique needs, strengths, and preferences.

Understanding the ‘Why’ — Explores what triggers behaviours of concern (e.g., unmet needs, communication barriers, sensory issues).

Proactive Interventions — Focuses on environmental changes and skill-building to prevent issues before they occur.

Minimising Restrictive Practices — Strives to reduce or eliminate the use of restrictive practices by ensuring human rights and dignity.

The Positive Behaviour Support Framework

The PBS Framework

PBS plans are typically built through a structured, multi-step process:

Assessment — Conducting a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) to identify why a behaviour occurs.

Developing Strategies — Creating a personalised Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) that outlines proactive, active, and reactive strategies.

Skill Building — Teaching the individual alternative ways to communicate and get their needs met.

Implementation & Review — Training caregivers and support networks, and regularly reviewing the plan’s effectiveness.

Accessing PBS in Australia

In Australia, PBS is heavily utilised and highly regulated, particularly under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Find a Practitioner — Comprehensive and core BSPs must be written by registered, qualified Behaviour Support Practitioners.

Regulation — Practitioners and providers who use regulated restrictive practices must comply with strict national rules to safeguard participants.
